The MOT Explained

The blue “three triangles” logo, which stations have to display, identifies approved MOT test stations.

The MOT test is an annual test of vehicle safety, road-worthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in the United Kingdom for most vehicles over three years old used on any way defined as a road in the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Here at Johnson’s we test vehicle classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7. We have an MOT viewing area available should you desire to watch.

We also have a comfortable, spacious waiting area offering reading material as well as refreshments and free WIFI.

In Great Britain MOT testing centres are regulated and licensed by the Department and Transport and DVSA for he purpose, and the individual testers carrying out the inspections also have
to be trained and certified.

The MOT test covers the following aspects:

 – Lighting and signalling equipment
 – Steering (including suspension)
 – Brakes
 – Tyres and wheels
 – Seat belts
 – Body, structure and general items.
 – Exhaust, fuel and emissions
   (Unless Electric)
 – Driver’s view of the road

An MOT test certificate confirms that at the time of test, the vehicle has met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards. It does not mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the life of the certificate.

The test does not cover the condition of the engine (other than the emissions), clutch or gearbox.
